The Castle

The two affluents of the creek frame an artificial elevation of some 30 m diameter. Once a castle stood here.

The dense vegetation did not facilitate to picture it but you can see an elevated patch of ground in the picture center. When I came to this area I thought in error that the former castle at this place was just a rumour. But here I confused this place with another one nearby of the same name founded in the 19. century. I searched here because of the old roads and the creek, not because of the castle. Indeed, to this day I did not search the castle hill itself.

The small hill did not carry a big stone castle but only a small wooden construction similar to a fenced tower. It was the symbol of power for some local ruler. I think the iron ore processing was contemporary to the castle so it dates ca. from the 10. to the 13. century.
The picture shows an excerpt of the famous medieval Bayeux Tapestry describing in a comic like fashion the events prior to the battle of Hastings in 1066. It is a fantastic contemporary picture and text source. It shows people defending a similar wooden fortress surrounded by a trench just as the castle described here was at least partly surrounded by the two creeks. The fortress on the tapestry named Dinan was finally set on fire which caused the defenders to give up and handle the keys over on a long pole to the attacker in charge on the right. Dinan was probably larger than the one discussed here. Nevertheless the tapestry helps to get an idea how the it once looked like.
